Qué es y cómo reconocer la neumonía atípica

La neumonía atípica es una enfermedad respiratoria que se caracteriza por la inflamación y colapso del tejido que rodea los alvéolos pulmonares produciendo dificultad notoria en la respiración. En nuestro país, se origina por las bacterias mycoplasma pneumoniae y chlamydia pneumoniae, contra las cuales no se han encontrado aún vacunas que las contrarresten, además, la enfermedad puede resultar difícil de reconocer a simple vista.

Esta enfermedad suele afectar a aquellos que se integran en grupos numerosos y en lugares cerrados tales como casas, colegios, cuarteles militares, etc. A pesar de estar presente en todo el año, se muestra con mayor frecuencia entre los meses de agosto y octubre.

Principalmente aparece en niños menores de 2 años, ancianos mayores de 75 años, asmáticos, fumadores, bebedores y personas con insuficiencias renales. Tiene un período de incubación de 3 a 4 semanas y los síntomas más comunes son fiebre, tos, ronquera y en algunos casos dificultad respiratoria, explica Guillermo Istúriz médico neumonólogo.

Frente a un posible caso de neumonía atípica el especialista recomienda:

  • Acudir al médico si presenta una tos seca que dura más de 4 días.
  • No automedicarse.
  • Evadir las multitudes.
  • Mantenerse alejado de corrientes de aire.

Para prevenir el contagio es necesario cubrirse la boca y la nariz al momento de estornudar.
